The increasing demand of electronic gadgets like PC’s, TV’s, Blackberries and so on are contributing a major role in global energy drain. Although these items are very fascinating and liked by everyone but its negative impact it inevitable. It was the time when everything men used to do was manual without the intervention of technology but today the scenario has entirely changed. This era is ruled by the technology and everything in technology is primarily based on electronics. No doubt these items play a major role in developing the world economy and contribute to the betterment of living standards. But the vast use of these gadgets has led to energy consumption at a devastating rate.

Study predicts that the energy consumption of these gadgets will tripe itself to the current rate by 2030. But there also lies a lot of efficiency with these gadgets. According to one of the studies conducted by International Energy Agency says that electronic devices currently account for 0.15% of total household electricity consumption. But this consumption is not going to remain constant for any long because it is rapidly rising. One of the reports says that despite the anticipated improvement in the efficiency of electronic gadgets, the electricity savings will be overshadowed seeing the rising demand for technology all around the globe. More and more electronic items are introduced in the market and the users are increasing day by day. The problem of power drain has become a global issue.

It is estimated that around 2 billion TV sets are in use with 1.3 sets in each house on an average have access to electricity. Also it is projected that there will be more than 3.5 billion mobile phone subscribers in the upcoming years. But of course today the survival without these electronic gadgets is questionable.  In fact this number is going to rise in the coming years. This is because today the amazement of electronic devices is seen not only in adults or youth but children are greatly affected by the electronic devices like music players, video games etc. The only measure to rectify the problem is to tap the technologies that are already available. Use of energy saving devices will ultimately lower down the country’s electricity consumption thereby improving its consumption globally.

Measures are needed to be taken to control and save the power consumption by these electronic devices. Many mobile devices are although much more efficient in terms of power utility as compared to others which run off the main electricity bill. This can be corrected by adopting methods like increasing the battery life of the mobile devices or using the replaceable cells rather than batteries that requires frequent charging. Emphasis is laid on designing the products that uses less power. We must learn to make use of every energy efficiency opportunities. California is coming up with one such approach. It has laid down a proposal which will regulate the sale of TV’s that do not meet their standards of energy efficiency.
